Disney Movie Night & Imagination Playground

Disney-logoFor the past few years, Disney has continued to provide movie nights and backpacks filled with back to school supplies at SNL sites. In 2016, Disney community relations staff as well as their VoluntEARS coordinated a movie night (Zootopia) and set up an interactive imagination playground at Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center. School-aged participants received a backpack filled with back to school supplies and Disney Gear.

welovelaLos Angeles Dodgers

This is the second year the Los Angeles Dodgers partnered with SNL to implement the #WeLoveLAReaders reading challenge. In 2016 the program was implemented at 7 SNL sites (Wilmington, Lemon Grove, Toberman, Sun Valley, Slauson, Mount Carmel, Costello.) Participants who completed the literacy challenge (read and completed a story log) were eligible for free tickets to an August/September Dodgers game.

Some SNL sites also are part of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation RBI program.

Los Angeles Police Department & Intervention

The Los Angeles Police Department (“LAPD”) is a key partner in our programming.  Select officers work along side community intervention workers and community members to identify youth eligible to be hired from the 32 communities. These identified youth then help implement Summer Night Lights programming.  Community intervention workers and LAPD officers work together to create peace at the 32 sites so that all residents (gang affiliated or not) feel safe to come out to the parks and take part in the activities with each other and with law enforcement.

Be Forever Fit Program

This year we teamed up with Harbor-UCLA Pediatrics Be Forever Fit to offer resources for children and adolescents on how to prevent obesity, and how to maintain healthy, sustainable eating habits.  We piloted this service in the communities surrounding the Martin Luther King and Normandale Recreation Centers and plan to expand to additional SNL communities going forward.
