What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to read, understand and respond to our own or other people’s emotions. It allows us to identify, label, express and regulate our emotions as well. Emotional intelligence allows us to not only view the value in ourselves but will allow us to see the value in others and help nurture and encourage long-lasting relationships. Here are a few tips to improve your emotional intelligence.
- Help Others: Helping others will allow you to make a positive impact on a person’s life. Simple gestures such as opening doors or simply listening to what they have to say can demonstrate the importance you place on others.
- Think before you speak: Sometimes we speak before we truly think through what we want to say. Take a moment before you speak to process what the other person. Taking a moment before speaking can help you from making important decisions based on a temporary emotion.
- Show Empathy: Try to see things from the other person’s perspective rather than jump to a judgment or conclusion. This will allow you to better connect and communicate with others.
- Apologize and Forgive: It can be hard to apologize and can take a significant amount of courage to place yourself in a vulnerable position. Showing humility can help others trust and admire you.
